Mukundu's story

Mukundu is known for his skills in building houses using the local material like mud and straw is from G Plot island of PatharPratima block. Mukundu is 63 now and is known across many villages in Patharpratima and beyond for his skills. During the monsoon when his trade is on a low, Mukundu does fishing which helps him support his family. In the last few years, due to deteriorating eye sight he could not work comfortably, at times reading the measurements wrong, or mixing the material incorrectly led to losses as he had to pay back to the customer for low quality work. This has pushed him in depression. When CHW visited Mukundu and explained to him that a simple surgery can help him regain his vision and that the surgery cost will also be supported, Mukundu felt that his prayers have been answered.

CHW accompanied Mukundu to the vision centre in PatharPratima from where he was guided for the surgery to the base hospital. With his eye sight restored, Mukundu is back to work. More than the money earned through his work, he feels pride to have earned his dignity and name back as the best in his trade in the area.
