Disabled people are often the most marginalised in society and there is a lot of social ostracism that’s largely because of stereotyping and inadequate expectation from people with disabilities Sightsavers’ projects for Social inclusion are implemented in partnership with general development NGOs and strive to build a conducive environment for disabled persons to lead lives as equal members of society. The core focus of such projects is to ensure that the disabled person is equipped with requisite skills to lead a life of independence and dignity. Sightsavers has been supporting implementation of projects of social inclusion since 1983.
An important part of Sightsavers’ work is to advocate for change: from changes in attitudes, to positions or policies affecting eye health or disabled people’s rights. We also help people who are blind to advocate for their rights, and the most effective way of doing this is to work with blind or disabled people’s organisation.
Our target group can be classified as below:
We identify projects that contribute to the achievement of Sightsavers India’s strategic aims (covered above). On the basis of socio economic indicators e.g prevalence of blindness, low vision and other causes of avoidable blindness, health status, status of education etc. and need analysis studies are done. Screening of possible stakeholders is then conducted and a program to work for the avoidable blindness and social inclusion of persons with visual impairment.
Sightsavers works in partnership with NGOs, the partnership is based on common goal and vision, learning from each other, doing capacity building through training on strategies, approaches, methods implemented in the field, financial accounting systems, reporting etc. So in one word it’s not a relationship which is based on providing funding support alone but its partnership in true sense, where we do capacity building of partner organization.
